| Ich spaker keine deuche. Ich bin Australian.
I would like to know the mechanical differences between the first and second models of the SLK 230 Kompressor, i.e. pre-2000 and post 2000 models. Is there any differences between:
1. Supercharger, at what rpm does it engage in each model?
2. Torque converter (5 speed automatic), are both lock-up above 2nd gear?
3. Variable valve/cam timing, are both the same?
4. Performance figures, 0-100 km/h?
In Australia according to MB the first model was discontinued in June 2000, but the salesmen say there is not much difference between the two models. I am looking to buy second hand, and would like to know the differences. The English language forum don't know the answers, and suggested I contact MBSLK.de. Hope someone can help. My apologies if this has been discussed before, but I wasn't able to search or read your archives. (Dumb Aussie from the land down under!)

| Hi Christo,
attempt of an answer:
Ad 1:
The supercharger of the face lifted (FL) models is permanently engaged, the charger of the pre-FL is engaged via a magnetic clutch depending on ambient temperatur, engine temperature, speed and load. The FL charger is a Japanese product the former has been from Eaton.
Ad 2:
No kowledge about that.
Ad 3:
Since both of the engines are of the same type the variable cam timing is basically the same but it may be that as a result of development parts and/or components are different.
Ad 4:
Have a look here:

Technical data are selfexplanatory

| Hi Christo,
there are quite a few other differences between the facelift and
pre facelift models which might be of interest if you are taking
a buying decision:
- improved seats in FL
- improved crash safety through structural improvements
- ESP standard on FL models
- higher quality interior
- better 6 speed manual gearbox (was 5 for the old preFL manual)
- optical improvements - exterior - take a look at some photos here on MBLSK
- 5mm lowered suspension on FL, improved suspension trimming
- improved rear stabilizer
- bigger fuel tank
Hope this helps,
Patrick

| Oh, and I forgot: some people report that the preFL 230
had an underdimensioned clutch. Also, sidebags were not standard
on all preFL models - easy to check by the SRS badges on the doors.
There are many people here who spend lots of effort - and money -
in huting down exterior and interior parts to make the optical transition
from preFL to FL. Although you asked about mechnanical differences
you might take this into consideration too! Some people actually
prefer the old looks, though. In my personal view, it stands a little
thin on the ground when compared with the younger models.

| Hi Christo,
I think one issue is missing: the torque converter.
Both models have a 5 speed automatic.
You can block (=lock-up?) the gears by drawing back the gear-shift lever in the pre 2000 model. I guess down to the 2nd gear.
The torque converter was a little bit improved for the post 2000 models. In those cars you can shift the gears by switching the lever to the left or right in position D. Once to the left the 4th gear is blocked, twice to the left the 3rd ... etc. down the 1st gear. But in each gear the automatic switches up, if the maximun of revolutions is reached (~6100 rpm). Moreover the automatic recognizes, if you are driving fast in a curve. Then it doesn't change the gears.
Regards
